  • Rethinking Water Challenges in China with Hongqiao Liu

China’s economic miracle has come at a heavy environmental price, and policy makers are only beginning to respond in earnest. While China’s leaders tackle the country’s smog problems, non-gaseous pollutants are a mounting environmental and public health threat. Unsafe drinking water is pumped into millions of homes every day, and under-regulated rare earth metals mining has rendered whole villages uninhabitable. Widespread awareness of urban and rural water pollution has fueled a boom in China’s bottled water industry, currently growing twice as fast as the country’s GDP. Bottled water is not however, a sustainable replacement for clean tap water; lack of oversight at treatment facilities does not guarantee its safety for consumption, and massive amounts of plastic waste is generated. Mean...

BREAKING NEWS: China to send envoy to North Korea, reopening dialogue with the isolated regime ★ ★ Please support growing channel by the press Subscribe LATEST NEWS 360 here : https://goo.gl/KUf71B ★ ★ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ BEIJING — China is sending a senior diplomat to visit North Korea as an envoy of President Xi Jinping, state media reported Wednesday, reopening a channel of dialogue with the isolated regime. The announcement comes a week after President Trump visited China and asked Xi to work hard to fix the problem of North Korea’s nuclear program. But it is not clear whether this trip has anything to do with that visit. State-run Xinhua news agency said Song Tao, who heads the Communist Party’s external affairs department, will visit from Friday, to “inform” the government there about the recently concluded Communist Party Congress that took place in Beijing. Indeed, Beijing routinely undertakes such trips to fellow Communist states after key party meetings, and Song has already visited Vietnam and Laos on a similar mission. Xinhua did not say if Song would discuss North Korea’s nuclear program or meet the country’s leader, Kim Jong-un. Nevertheless it is an important opportunity for Beijing to reopen a channel of dialogue with the isolated regime, experts said, as relations between the countries have deteriorated significantly in recent years. China has an official special envoy to North Korea, Kong Xuanyou, but he is not believed to have visited Pyongyang since taking the job in August. His predecessor, Wu Dawei, last visited North Korea in February 2016, but Song will be the first ministerial-level visit since Politburo Standing Committee member Liu Yunshan visited Pyongyang and met Kim in October 2015. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`~~~~ + We report daily news, the latest news. + We are very pleased to cooperate with other electronic newspapers. + Videos can use content-based copyright law contains reasonable use Fair Use (https://www.youtube.com/yt/copyright/) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ★ CONNECT WITH US ★ ★ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/latestnews360/ ★ Twitter: https://twitter.com/GlobalHotNews24 ★ Website: https://latestnews360today.blogspot.com/ ★ ★ SEE MORE: #latestnews360 1, PLAYLIST BREAKING NEWS TODAY - PRESIDENT TRUMP LATEST NEWS TODAY: https://goo.gl/VG4yia 2, NORTH KOREA NEWS: https://goo.gl/UrFXrS #latestnews360 #youtube #breakingnewstoday #breakingnews #presidentdonaldtrump #presidenttrumpnews #usanewstoday #trumplatestnews #latestnewstoday #latestnews #usnews #northkoreanews #DonaldTrump #USAmorningnews Please See The Copyright Laws Below : Copyright Law 105. OUR FOUNDER, TIEN CHING Tien Ching grew up in Beijing and attended a privileged girls-only school where the daughters of Mao, Deng and other high ranking communists’ officials also attended. Because of the Cultural Revolution, along with millions of other young people, her dreams and opportunities were shattered. Instead of going to university she was sent to Gansu province and worked in a factory for eight years. In 1983 she moved to Canada and have made Vancouver her home ever since. She owned and managed an art gallery for over 20 years. Her two children were born in Canada and graduated from Canadian universities. Her dream now is to give these girls in rural China the gift of education which she did not receive.

VO Laos and China agree on cooperation in border trade and the joint development of economic cooperative zones INTRO: Lao Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith pays an official visit to China from Nov. 28 to Dec. 1 at the invitation of Chinese Premier Li Keqiang STORY: Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith on Monday arrived in Beijing on a four-day official visit to China in response to an invitation from his Chinese counterpart Li Keqiang. Following an official welcome ceremony, the two Prime Minsters attended a bilateral meeting at the National People’s Congress of China in Beijing. Prime Minister Thongloun’s visit is the first official trip to China since he took office in April this year. At the meeting, the Prime Minister expressed his gratitude to China for its assistance and support for the successful ASEAN Chairmanship of the Lao PDR and informed the host that the development projects funded with loans and grants provided by the Chinese Government were being implemented in a concrete manner thus contributing to the socio-economic development of Laos. The Prime Minister expressed his support for China’sOne Belt One Road” initiative and highly valued latter’s active co-operation with neighbouring countries for providing 5 million more yuans to ASEAN-China Fund and is committed to providing 3.6 billion yuans to the least developed countries (LDCs) in ASEAN and 50 million yuans for building industrial parks in ASEAN member countries. The two Prime Ministers also witnessed the signing of agreements related to the strengthening of mutual co-operation on economic and border trade affairs and a master plan on Boten-Bohan special economic cooperation. It is recorded that, the Chinese government has also decided to increase scholarships for ASEAN students to 300,000 by 2025, and establish the ASEAN-China Silk Road Scholarship that will provide 1,000 scholarships in 2017. Both sides also shared common points of view that they need to diversify and strengthen the comprehensive strategic co-operative partnership between Laos and China. They also exchanged views on regional and international issues of common interest. Both sides agreed that since the two countries upgraded their ties to a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership level in 2009, the two countries have enjoyed stronger mutual trust that has deepened in respect to political ties leading to a win-win co-operation in all areas. They also agreed to enhance co-operation and assistance under regional and international frameworks for their own interest as well as for the peace and friendship and development in the region and the world community. The four-day visit also takes Lao Prime Minister Thongloun to central China's Hunan province. According to the Xinhua News Agency, starting from the 1980s, many Hunan natives went to Laos to seek business opportunities. They started from scratch in the hardware industry and gradually grew into influential forces in industries like motorcycle, motorcycle parts, supermarkets and mobile phone sales According to the economic and commercial counselor's office of Chinese embassy in Laos, Chinese investors have currently invested in 764 projects in the country in industries such as mineral products, agriculture, electricity, artifacts, tourism. Among these projects, 552 were funded by Chinese companies, while the two countries invested in 212 of the projects. China has become Lao's biggest source of foreign investment.

Meanwhile, the extraction and processing of rare earth metals, in which China accounts for 85% of global production, is wreaking environmental havoc in surrounding districts. Though critical to many modern technology industries, through chemical waste and the unearthing of radioactive substances, rare earth metals mining has created “cancer villages,” contaminated drinking water and agricultural produce, and is now endangering the Yellow River. Hongqiao Liu is an environmental researcher and award winning journalist who focuses on balancing economic and environmental imperatives. In her recent research, Ms. Liu has examined the alarming effects of water pollution and rare earth metals mining in China, and investigated the obstacles to regulatory reform. Ms. Liu discussed her findings with the National Committee on November 7, 2016, in New York City. Bio: Hongqiao Liu has worked as both an environmental researcher and journalist at some of China’s most influential media outlets: Southern Metropolis Daily and Caixin Media. Her reporting ranges from social and civic issues and environmental crime to emerging environment-related health challenges in China. Her reporting has raised heated public debate within China, and inspired policy change at the national level. Ms. Liu is currently a consultant for China Water Risk (CWR), a think tank focused on addressing business and environmental risk arising from China’s limited water resources. At CWR, she has expanded her previous investigations into reports that explore China’s challenges in safeguarding its drinking water sources. Ms. Liu’s work at CWR includes China’s Long March Towards Safe Drinking Water, Bottled Water in China: Boom or Bust?, and Rare Earths: Shades of Grey – Can China Continue to Fuel our Clean and Smart Future? These reports have been widely cited in policy papers released by China’s Ministry of Environmental Protection, Caixin, HSBC, and Moody’s Research. Issues raised by Ms. Liu were also picked up by global and local media such as The Guardian, The Economist, China Daily, Xinhua, and Phoenix Weekly, among others. Ms. Liu is a regular contributing author to the Green Book of Environment: The Annual Report on Environment Development of China. She also works closely with China Dialogue’s “Third Pole” and Internews’ Earth Journalism Network to expand the role of environmental journalism in Chinese media. Ahead of COP21, Liu was a judge in UNDP’s annual “Climate Change Storytelling Contest” and in Paris, she sat on a panel to discuss green growth along with The Economist’s senior editor at “Earth to Paris” hosted by the United Nations Foundation. Outside China, Ms. Liu has explored new approaches to covering transnational wildlife crime. She worked closely with the China-Africa Reporting Project of Witwatersrand University and the Forum for African Investigative Reporters to develop a GIS-based database on rhinoceros poaching and trafficking. Speaking at the African Investigative Journalists Annual Conference in 2014, Ms. Liu introduced China’s perspectives on wildlife crime to help facilitate a global approach toward preventing the trade. Her collaboration with the Oxpeckers Center of Environmental Investigative Journalism, an African journalism initiative, continues today. Ms. Liu attended from Beijing Normal University on a national journalism scholarship, and graduated with a bachelor in communications. She holds the record as the youngest recipient of many journalism awards and fellowships on environmental and science journalism from Chinese and international media associations.

If you're like me, you've probably day dreamed about what you would do if you won the lottery, so we here at the Run List put together five different real life scenarios from lottery winners around the world. Number 1: Giving Back to the Community When Cindy and Mark Hill from Dearborn, Missouri took home $136.5 million last November, they said they would give most of it away. And that is exactly what they did. They paid for a new fire station in Mr. Hill's home town, set up a scholarship fund for their local high school, and gave $50, 000 to buy land for a new municipal septic tank. We'd all like to think we'd be this generous with our earnings but the reality is, most people fall into the next category. Number 2: Personal Pleasure Many lottery winners have a rags-to-riches stories, so maybe it's not surprising that some choose to keep the money for themselves. Take Adam Young and Tracy Tyler for example. The couple, who had two young children, were struggling to pay rent when they won almost £6 million late last month. The British couple is planning to move out of their three-bedroom rented apartment and buy a five bedroom mansion, a new rover and take a safari in Kenya. Now, The National Endowment for Financial Education estimates that about 70% of people with a sudden wealth gain lose that money after a few years. This could explain the next category. Number 3: Lottery Winners Who end up Poor At just 16 years old Callie Rogers was the youngest Brit to ever win the lottery. At the time, she was living in a foster home and working for £3.60 an hour when she won almost 2 million pounds in the UK lottery. After spending excessively on drugs, parties, vacations and plastic surgery, Rogers frittered away almost all her money. Now ten years later, she has about £2,000 pounds in the bank and is training to be a nurse. She says the money almost ruined her and she tried to commit suicide three times before she finally got her life back on track. Number 4: Law Suits Jack Whittaker experienced a number of tragedies after winning $350 million in a 2002 US multistate-jackpot. Already pretty well off from his work at a construction company, he blamed the new money for the series of tragedies that followed his win. He not only lost his daughter, and his granddaughter to drugs but his attorney estimates that he spent about $3million dollars fending off lawsuits. As of 2007 he said he had had 400 lawsuits filed against his, and in his words, it was because "everybody wants something for nothing." Number 5: MURDERED Sadly there have been a few cases where winning the lottery has meant loss of life. 46-year-old Urooj Khan from Chicago was poisoned in 2012 with cyanide within hours of accepting his lottery check of about half a million dollars. His death has been classified as a homicide but no arrests or convictions have been made. Similarly, 47-year old Abraham Shakespeare from Florida was murdered after winning $30 million in a state lottery. Dee Dee More was convicted of his murder, after his body was found on her boyfriend's property. So, while this month's US jackpot hits $425 million was split by three winners, it will be interesting to see what they do with all that cash. Well, what do you think? Have you ever won any money in the lottery? How did you spend it? How do you imagine your life would be different if you became a multi-millionaire all of a sudden.
